Don’t Spend 27 Years Between Your Ears

By Jules McVey

Yesterday morning, putting our sign on the sidewalk, a woman in her 70s abruptly stopped and looked at me and said, "It's so good to see a face for this place - thank you for all the color you're putting into the world."

Her words immediately warmed my heart. I told her thank you and that she should come and paint. She looked down and said she's too old now, but maybe she'd book a session for her grandkids but they're teenagers so they'd probably complain. Told her to paint with them and show 'em how it's done.

She gave a soft smile, thanked me again, and returned to her walk.

I knew this guy named Erick in my early 20s; probably one of my greatest friends. He would leave voicemails along the lines, "I just looked in the mirror and GOD DANG I'M GORGEOUS!...call me back!" I still smile just thinking about how free he was and the fun we had.

A guy who spent 27 years in prison said the walls that contained him meant nothing. He said true prison is created in the space between your ears. You choose on how long you stay.

When was the last time you looked in a mirror and said out loud, "I fall more in love with you every day...I'm so proud of you. You are the best and GOD DANG girl, you're GOREGOUS! Own it!"

Don't spend the next 27 years between your ears.

Image: a guy named John Wick was at a team building and his people finally got him, lol. Don't be afraid to embrace color, play, the unknown.

Paint-splattered art studio floor with brushes, cans, and bottles; a person’s legs stand nearby amid bright, messy abstract colors. Body outline of a participant named John Wick at a team building - everyone laughing because they finally "got" John Wick.
